Overview
The Arab International Academy adopts the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) from Kindergarten through Grade 5 as an educational framework that places the learner at the centre of the learning process. The programme focuses on building understanding, nurturing curiosity, and connecting learning to everyday life.
The PYP is grounded in conceptual and inquiry-based learning and aims to support the holistic development of the child; academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Students engage in a broad range of subject areas, including languages, social studies, mathematics, science, the arts, physical education, and personal and social education, within a balanced and interconnected learning experience.
Learning in the Primary School is organised around six transdisciplinary themes that help students develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them. These themes are presented in age-appropriate ways that encourage inquiry, exploration, and meaning-making:
- Who We Are?
Students explore identity, relationships, and what it means to be human within the family, school, and wider community. - Where We Are in Place and Time?
Students explore concepts of place and time through personal histories, local and global contexts, history, journeys, and discoveries. - How We Express Ourselves?
Students develop their ability to express ideas, feelings, values, and beliefs through language, the arts, movement, and a variety of forms of expression. - How the World Works?
Students explore the natural world and its laws, and examine the relationship between people and the environment through observation, experimentation, and scientific thinking. - How We Organise Ourselves?
Students investigate how societies function, how decisions are made, and the impact of social and economic systems on people and the environment. - Sharing the Planet
Students explore concepts of responsibility, equity, sustainability, and relationships between individuals and communities, fostering values of cooperation, peace, and respect for others.
Through this approach, we ensure that learning is meaningful and engaging, nurturing thinking, building awareness, and supporting students in becoming active learners who participate confidently in their world.
As a culminating experience of the Primary Years Programme, Grade 5 students participate in a significant milestone known as the PYP Exhibition. During this capstone experience, students engage in a collaborative and comprehensive research project that explores real world issues or challenges drawn from their own contexts. They investigate these topics in depth, analyze different perspectives, and propose creative and meaningful solutions.
Through this process, students develop research skills, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills, while taking ownership of their learning. Students present their projects and research findings to parents and the wider school community during a dedicated Exhibition event organized by the school. The Exhibition becomes a celebration of learning, a space for sharing knowledge, and an opportunity to highlight student voice and achievement.
